Mayor Debra McCartt, Amarillo College and the Panhandle Association for the Education of Young Children played host to the annual Mayor’s Breakfast for the Friends of Young Children.

The event, held April 2 in the Oak Acorn Room of the College Union Building, honored Pat Mathis, central campus director at Opportunity School.

Mathis was selected by the mayor in recognition of her talented and tireless efforts to prepare the children of Opportunity School for successful futures. She will mark her 40th anniversary of service with the school this fall.

Mathis began her career in September 1969 as a teacher, leading classrooms of 3- and 4-year-olds to successful academic careers, and conducting weekly home visits with the children’s parents.
