RESPECT AND SERVE

By Claudia Stuart

How do you respect someone
When they are shooting you to the ground?
You don’t.

How do you respect someone
As they hurt and maim you when others aren’t around?
You don’t.

How do you respect someone
While they treat you with such disdain?
You don’t.

How do you respect someone
Who doesn’t bother to know your name?
You don’t.

How do you respect someone
Who hunts you down in cold blood?
You don’t.

How do you respect someone
Who does not earn your trust?
You don’t

You could see me as a person
Say “Hello” and build a friend.
You won’t.

You could treat me as a brother
And our struggling streets to defend.
You won’t.

You could help and aid others
Whose lives are in distress.
You won’t.

You could protect and serve in ways
That bring respect and honor and not neglect.
You won’t.

You could find a pathway to understanding
Seeing my children in yours.
You won’t.

You could be a better person
Shielding all communities at your doors.
You won’t.

Put Christ first in our hearts
And in our minds.
We will.

See in others what we honor, respect
And can rebuild.
We will.

Carry trust and love around
As a mantle for respect.
We will.

Foster caring and understanding and
Build bridges without regret.
We will.

Open doors of opportunity for all to live,
Learn and work together.
We will.

Respect and serve each other…
Black lives matter; your lives matter; all lives matter.
We will.
