Juneteenth 2012

Picture 500 of 500

Amarillo’s Juneteenth celebrations were officially launched this past Saturday with a half day celebration in Bones Hooks Park. Saturday’s event featured several performances by local praise and worship teams, dance groups, the presentation of the North Amarillo Father of the Year Award and fashion show.

Reverend Tiller Watson, III was the recipient of the North Amarillo Father of the Year Award. Reverend Watson is the Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, the award paid tribute to his vision and accomplishments achieved working toward empowering the youth of North Amarillo.

The fashion show, billed as the crowning jewel of the celebration, was a spectacular display of glamor and style heretofore not witnessed in any outdoor setting in Amarillo.  The show featured models of both genders sporting original designs by George Killingsworth and Deric Tyma of the Fort Worth design house Geo’s Collection and designer Dexter Payne of Design by Dex.

This year’s  Juneteenth celebrations are also coupled with the biennial events of the Carver reunion.  Carver alums from across the country will join with local alums and the community to celebrate the history of Carver.  The lore of Carver is unrivaled by any school in the history of Amarillo.

No activities were scheduled for Monday but Juneteenth events hosted by the Hilltop Senior Citizens Association and Carver Reunion events hosted by the various Carver alumni organizations are scheduled Tuesday through Saturday of this week.
